Want To See My Hair?, 2017

Want To See My Hair? is a photo series of five images of my “uncovered” hair. As a practicing Muslim woman, I consider my hair a female adornment and my headscarf a modesty covering. Through the experience of wearing the hijab, there has been a lot of curiosity and in some cases, fetishization of my covered hair. Want To See My Hair? responds to the curiosity by using my hair as the subject, but in an unconventional way. This hair is no longer a cypher for notions of beauty, gender or modesty. Want To See My Hair? is a playful interrogation of the comments, the judgment and the often awkward fetishization that is experienced by women who wear the hijab. Here is the hair, the hair that flows beneath that piece of cloth.
