Not Our Space, 2019
Negative Space (also known as white space) is the space that surrounds the subject(s) in an image, while the subject(s) is/are referred as Positive Space.
Not Our Space is an experimental video that focuses on the wordplay of white space as negative space. As a visible Black Muslim residing in Toronto, the majority of spaces that I enter are generally filled with white bodies. Oftentimes, this translates into the space being uncomfortable. This work deconstructs a white space in an attempt to clearly visualize the abundance of negative space surrounding the subjects.
